What Is a Flap Disc?

Flap discs were developed as an alternative to resin-bonded grinding wheels and fiber discs. Advances in welding processes, such as MIG and TIG welding, have reduced weld size, making flap discs an ideal solution for removing welds while blending and finishing surfaces in fewer steps.

Flap Disc Backing Shapes

Flap discs are available in two primary backing shapes.

Type 29 (Conical)

  • Recommended working angle: 15°–25°.

Flap Disc Backing Materials

The backing material supports the abrasive flaps and influences durability, flexibility, and overall grinding performance.

  • Polyester: Withstands extremely high grinding pressure, making it ideal for aggressive stock removal and edge grinding.
  • Cotton: Offers maximum flexibility and conformability. Best used under lighter pressure for blending and finishing.
  • Polyester/Cotton Blend: Combines the durability of polyester with the flexibility of cotton, making it an excellent general-purpose choice.
  • United Abrasives Fiberglass Backing: Engineered for superior strength, durability, and safety. The higher fiberglass content provides increased rigidity and longer service life.
  • United Abrasives Plastic Backing: Resistant to chemicals, solvents, and extreme temperatures while preventing scratching.
  • Soft ABS Plastic Backing: Can be trimmed as the disc wears to expose additional abrasive material.
  • Hard Plastic Backing: Provides maximum rigidity and long service life for demanding applications.

Flap Disc Density

Flap disc density refers to the amount of abrasive material layered onto the disc.

Regular density flap disc

Regular (Standard) Density: Best for aggressive stock removal and general-purpose industrial grinding.

High density flap disc

High Density: Contains approximately 40% more abrasive material than standard density discs, providing longer life and improved performance on curved or uneven surfaces. High-density flap discs excel at blending and finishing operations.
